Slogadh for Mayo in October

Preparations are continuing for the Sinn Féin Culture Department's annual Slogadh which this year will be held in Pullathomais in County Mayo. This year is the 11th Slogadh, a two day conference which moves from Gaeltacht to Gaeltacht each year and which prides itself in attracting local and national participation from republicans and non republicans alike.

The various debates and the tour of the local area are all conducted through Irish, but Eoghan Mac Cormaic, Chairperson of the Culture Department, explained this week that `while it's primarily an Irish language weekend, we always encourage people whose Irish may not be fluent, or maybe a bit rusty, to come along - and they'll definitely benefit from the experience'.

The Slogadh dates for this year are Friday 3 October to Sunday 5 October in The Lighthouse Tavern in Pullathomais and the themes under discussion range from `Aithint don Sainordú' (Recognising the Mandate); `Trí Chomóradh:1798, 1847, 1848' (Three Commemorations: 1798, 1847, 1848); and `Eisimirce, Inimirce, agus Forbairt' (Emigration, Immigration and Development).

Elected Sinn Féin representatives - including Caoimhghín O Caoláin TD - and elected representatives from other parties, visitors from Forbairt Feirste and community activists in Mayo, and local historians will all address the Slogadh, while tours planned include a visit to local knitting factories, The Ceide Fields and historic sites.

Details on the Slogadh are to be had from Eoghan MacCormaic 44 Parnell Square or by phoning 086 248 12 42, where bookings for the weekend can also be made. See also an leathanach Gaeilge.
