‘Rally Against Racism’ sees thousands march against attacks

THOUSANDS of people from across the North gathered for Saturday’s anti-racism rally in Belfast to send a clear message to the bigots carrying out attacks on people from ethnic minority groups.

The upsurge in attacks carried out by loyalist paramilitary groups, mostly the unionist Ulster Volunteer Force, has seen driven people from their homes in areas dominated by loyalists gangs.

The sense of anger palpable among those attending the demonstration on Saturday 7 June was aimed as much at DUP First Minister Peter Robinson over his support for the anti-Islam diatribe by Christian fundamentalist preacher James McConnell as it was the loyalist gangs.

Saturday’s parade, organised by the trades union movement, Amnesty International and the Council for Ethnic Minorities was supported by groups and individuals from across the North, including alarge Sinn Féin contingent led by Junior Minister Jennifer McCann.

Speaking to An Phoblacht, Jennifer McCann said:

“This is an opportunity for people to stand up and show their rejection of racism in all its forms.

“It is also about showing support and solidarity for our ethnic minority communities who have contributed so much to the cultural diversity of our society.

“We want to send out a clear message that racist attitudes or attacks will not be tolerated in Belfast or anywhere across the island.”
