Sinn Féin condolences for former PUP Councillor Hugh Smyth
SINN FÉIN Councillor and Belfast City Council group leader Jim McVeigh has expressed condolences on the passing of former Councillor Hugh Smyth.
The veteran PUP representative had served the Court ward in the north-west of the city for 41 years before standing down in January due to ill health.
A former Mayor, Hugh Smyth was the leader of the PUP until 2002, when he was succeeded by David Ervine.
Councillor McVeigh said:
“Hugh was involved in local politics for many years and was one of the longest-serving councillors ever in Belfast.
“While we may not have always agreed politically, we got on well and Hugh was a man who wouldn’t pass you without saying hello.
“I wish on behalf of Sinn Féin to express our condolences to the family and friends of Hugh Smyth.”
