Women activists drive republican agenda — Elections 2014

• Ready for the canvass

'It goes without saying that all elections are important but for Sinn Féin every election is more important then the previous one'

A STRONG GROUP of republican women took to the streets of Twinbrook in west Belfast on Sunday 6 April to canvass for local Sinn Féin Councillor Charlene O’Hara in May’s local government elections.

The group – led by Executive Junior Minister Jennifer McCann, who represents the area in the Assembly – knocked doors and delivered hundreds of leaflets in the area.

As well as supporting Charlene O’Hara’s campaign in Twinbrook, the group (including republican ex-POWs and long-time activists) journeyed to the small County Antrim village of Glenavy where they repeated the exercise in support of Mary Kate Quinn.

Mary Kate is standing in the Killultagh Ward and is hopeful of taking a seat in May.

Jennifer McCann:

“It goes without saying that all elections are important but for Sinn Féin every election is more important then the previous one.

“We have two brilliant candidates in Charlene and Mary Kate who, no doubt, will raise the bar for the party so a canvass like this one involving women activists sends out a positive message and highlights women’s role in republican politics.”
