Cronyism on state boards must end, says Sinn Féin

Senator Kathryn Reilly, Mary Lou McDonald TD and Sinn Féin Dublin EU candidate Lynn Boylan

'It is clear that the cronyism of Fianna Fáil is not dead and gone, and is still very much alive and kicking under Fine Gael and Labour’s watch. Sinn Féin’s policy for transparency, accountability and diversity on state boards will once and for all end the current corrosive culture of cronyism' — Lynn Boylan

MARY LOU McDONALD TD has said the state must overhaul how it appoints members to state-sponsored boards after recent scandals surrounding appointments and mega-salaries in the charity sector.

The Dublin TD and member of the Public Accounts Committee said:

"Sinn Féin's policy document on corporate governance aims to restore confidence in state sponsored boards across all sectors, including charities in receipt of subsidies from Government and donations from the public."

The five proposals contained in the Good Board/Bad Board: Transparency, Accountability and Diversity on State Boards document include:-

•  Limiting directorships to five per individual;
•  40 per cent gender quotas on all boards;
•  Equity to remuneration for directors;
•  Transparency in appointments;
•  Timely provision of accounts and regular auditing.

Sinn Féin Dublin EU candidate Lynn Boylan added:

"It is clear that the cronyism of Fianna Fáil is not dead and gone, and is still very much alive and kicking under Fine Gael and Labour's watch. Sinn Féin’s policy for transparency, accountability and diversity on  state boards will once and for all end the current corrosive culture of cronyism."
