Remembering Volunteers Henry Hogan and Declan Martin
Words and pictures by Peadar Whelan
REPUBLICANS from across the North travelled to the north Antrim village of Dunloy on Sunday 23 February to mark the 30th anniversary of IRA Volunteers Henry Hogan and Declan Martin.
The Volunteers died on active service on 21 February 1984 in a gun battle with units of the British Army’s SAS.
During the battle, and despite being outnumbered, the IRA Volunteers shot dead SAS Sergeant Paul Oram and seriously wounded a second British soldier from Britain’s elite special forces.
Wounded themselves, the pair were subsequently executed by members of SAS back-up squads involved in the surveillance operation in the village.
