Video: Justice Minister Shatter uses "insults and bluster" to avoid questions on charity sector

Waterford Sinn Féin Senator David Cullinane

"This is not acceptable. The Minister is paid by the tax payers of this country and he should answer pressing and legitimate questions when they are put to him." - Senator David Cullinane

JUSTICE MINISTER Alan Shatter has been accused by Sinn Féin Senator David Cullinane of using "insults and bluster" to avoid answering questions about his Department. The charge came following a heated exchange in the Seanad during a debate on the Charities Regulation Bill 2009.

When Senator Cullinane put questions to the Minister as to why the Government has still not implemented the Charities Regulation Bill during its three years in office - a Bill which could have avoided recent scandals - Shatter responded by making remarks about the recent conflict in the North.

David Cullinane described the Minister's comments as "appalling" and called on him to apologise. The Minister refused to do so.

Senator Cullinane said:

"This is not acceptable. The Minister is paid by the tax payers of this country and he should answer pressing and legitimate questions when they are put to him."
