Video: Mary Lou McDonald grills Central Remedial Clinic ex-CEO Brian Conlan

‘We now know monies donated to support the vital work of the Central Remedial Clinic were not just siphoned off for top-up salaries but also for a massive pension pay-out to former CRC Chief Paul Kiely’ – Mary Lou McDonald

SINN FÉIN TD Mary Lou McDonald questions former CEO of the Central Remedial Clinic (CRC) Brian Conlan over the use of public money and donations to pay the salaries of senior staff and consultants.

CRC chiefs must return to Public Accounts Committee, says Mary Lou McDonald

AFTER today’s revelation that former CRC Chief Paul Kiely’s gold-plated pension was financed by fund-raising monies Sinn Féin Public Accounts Committee member Mary Lou McDonald TD has said is clear now that former CRC board members and both former CRC chiefs must return to the PAC so that the committee can conclusively get to the bottom of this scandal.

The Dublin Central TD said:

“Today’s evidence can leave us in doubt of the contempt former CRC

“Yet again a former CRC board member sought to stonewall the work of the Public Accounts Committee. We now know monies donated to support the vital work of the Central Remedial Clinic were not just siphoned off for top-up salaries but also for a massive pension pay-out to former CRC Chief Paul Kiely.

“It is absolutely unacceptable that each time the PAC investigates the Central Remedial Clinic we uncover new instances of malpractice.

“Families across the state who rely on the services of the CRC and have supported the organisation will be devastated by the revelation that €740,000 was paid out by ‘Friends and Supporters of the CRC’ to pay for former CRC Chief Paul Kiely’s gold-plated pension. This is an astonishing sum of money.

“Decisions made by the board of the CRC to not only sign-off on this pension pay-out but to keep the monies confidential gives us an insight into the sense of entitlement that existed.

“It is clear now that the CRC board members and both former CRC chiefs need to return to the PAC so that we can conclusively get to the bottom of this scandal. One thing is clear – thus far, former CRC board members have shown nothing but contempt for this process to date.”
