Conor McCabe pulls out of Labour History Society conference over Joan Burton invite
‘Just to state that due to the presence of Joan Burton I will no longer be speaking at this event’ – Conor McCabe
ONE KEY SPEAKER has already pulled out of this year’s Annual Conference of the Irish Labour History Society now it has been revealed that Labour Party deputy leader and Social Protection Minister Joan Burton TD is scheduled to open the event on 2 November.
The invite to the Dublin event – on the theme of ‘The 1913 Lockout’ – has caused surprise and anger because of the Labour Party and Fine Gael Government’s relentless austerity doctrine and more cuts in Budget 2014 this week.
Dr Conor McCabe – author of the acclaimed Sins of the Father: Tracing the Decisions That Shaped the Irish Economy – was headlined to speak on ‘The Wexford Lockout of 1911’. But he told the award-winning political blog Cedar Lounge Revolution when the Irish Labour History Society event was listed:
“Just to state that due to the presence of Joan Burton I will no longer be speaking at this event.”
A number of people interested in the event say they will not be going if Minister Burton is kept on the list. Observers are watching to see if any other speakers follow Conor McCabe’s lead.
