Lynn Ní Bhaoighealláin to contest Dublin EU seat for Sinn Féin
3 women in Sinn Féin’s 4 candidates for Europe
LYNN Ní BHAOIGHEALLÁIN from Tallaght – an environmental programme manager in Ballymun – was selected at the historic Rotunda in Parnell Square on Sunday afternoon as the Sinn Féin candidate for the three-seat constituency of Dublin in the European Parliament elections next year.
Lynn was appointed Chairperson of the Safefood Advisory Board (one of the Good Friday Agreement all-Ireland bodies) in 2010 after serving four years on the board.
Sinn Féin is the only party to contest the European elections on an all-Ireland basis and Lynn joins three other Sinn Féin candidates already selected.
In the Six Counties, the candidate is sitting MEP Martina Anderson, a member of the European United Left/Nordic Green Left (GUE/NGL) Group.
Matt Carthy from Cavan/Monaghan will be running in Midlands/North-West (MNW). This is a four-seat constituency made up of Connacht’s Galway, Mayo, Sligo, Roscommon and Leitrim; Ulster's Donegal, Cavan and Monaghan; plus Leinster's Louth, Meath, Kildare, Longford, Westmeath, Offaly and Laois.
In South – a four-seat constituency made up of Munster’s Clare, Limerick, Tipperary, Kerry, Cork and Waterford plus Leinster’s Kilkenny, Carlow, Wicklow and Wexford – the candidate is Liadh Ní Riada from Baile Bhuirne in the Muskerry Gaeltacht in County Cork. Liadh, Sinn Féin's National Language Officer, has been described by The Irish Times as “daughter of iconic composer and musician Seán Ó Riada”.
