Video: Hundreds protest against austerity as Dáil returns
The Waterford senator hit out at the Fine Gael and Labour coalition saying it is simply continuing the failed policies of Fianna Fáil
HUNDREDS of protesters gathered outside Leinster House on Wednesday evening to take part in a trade union rally in opposition to ongoing austerity policies.
Speaking at the People's Assembly event, Sinn Féin senator David Cullinane called on ordinary people to unite and boot pro-austerity parties out of government.
The Waterford senator hit out at the Fine Gael and Labour coalition saying it is simply continuing the failed policies of Fianna Fáil which unfairly target workers, young people and the most vulnerable in society. The Sinn Féin Workers Rights' spokesperson also said that Taoiseach Enda Kenny does not feel the pain inflicted by his government on ordinary citizens.
Earlier in the day - during a separate smaller protest - there were scuffles between gardaí and demonstrators outside Leinster House. At the same time as the trade union rally, another small group of protesters caused major traffic disruption by blocking O'Connell Bridge.
