'What's Left?' A look back at some odd bits from the week

'MetroHerald', Thursday

'An Phoblacht' rang the Adventure Cocktail Bar on Friday afternoon

NOMINEE for ‘Motormouth of the Month’? Step forward – and shut your pie hole – Fine Gael TD Bernard Durkan!

The North Kildare Blueshirt almost made Vincent Browne's hair go even frizzier this week with a non-stop stream of guff in defence of under-pressure Justice Minister Alan Shatter.

He left Irish Independent Political Editor Fionnan Sheahan in hysterics and everyone else breathless.

Take a look at Bernard blathering on in the video clip (top right) we’ve posted here.

MÍCHEÁL MARTIN’S support in the Dáil this week from the Soldiers of Destiny for gun running to anti-government rebels in Syria made more sense when you read Thursday’s MetroHerald free-sheet headline:

Al Qaeda terror boss 'fired over expenses'

The Metro claims there’s been a spat between the Al Qaeda leadership and their African branch head, Moktar Almoktar.

One Tweeter said it’s outrageous to compare Al Qaeda with Fianna Fáil – after all, Fianna Fáil has never fired anybody over outrageous expenses.

THE far-Right street mugs of the English Defence League are turning out all over England on Saturday to show their respect for slain British soldier Lee Rigby.

The Birmingham EDL will be at the war memorial near Centenary Square. It gave its members a crash course in basic etiquette for a mid-day memorial service. The Brum EDL’s Steve Knight pleads via Facebook:

“There are a few bars and coffee shops around for us to go to while we wait for everyone but please don’t go wild on the beer for those that are drinking.”

So you’d be “on the beer” before meeting at 11:30am in the morning for a memorial service to show your . . .  respect.

THE ‘upmarket’ Adventure Cocktail Bar, in London’s ‘Theatreland’ and close to Covent Garden, is tight-lipped about whether or not it is still selling its ‘Bloody Sundae’ cocktail.

The ‘Bloody Sundae’ comes topped with a toy soldier carrying a rifle, a clear reference to the massacre of 14 civil rights marchers in Derry in 1972 by British paratroopers.

The bar no longer allows comments on its Facebook page after a deluge of criticism from disgusted punters and has since removed its “Recommendations” section.

One of the top recommendations before it was shut down read:

“Great spot to laugh about the murder of unarmed civilians.”

An Phoblacht rang the bar on Friday afternoon to see if the tasteless tipple is still on sale. The staff member answering the phone said he couldn’t say Yes and he couldn't say No. So does that mean it still is?
