Anti-austerity students turn their backs on Taoiseach in Louth photo-call
The Fine Gael leader didn't know what to do as students ignored him
STUDENTS left Taoiseach Enda Kenny red-faced in a media photo-call at Dundalk Institute of Technology when they turned their backs on him in a protest against austerity, unemployment and emigration.
As the Fine Gael leader desperately tried to shake hands and talk with them, they turned their backs while showing signs saying "Dole" or the names of countries they will probably have to emigrate to for work.
An embarrassed Enda was left floundering as he tried in vain to get a student to talk to him. Just one protestor instinctively (or out of pity) shook hands with him.
The Taoiseach was in Louth to help open a new eBay headquarters in Dundalk.
In addition to the students, other local anti-austerity protesters – including campaigners against the Family Home Tax – held a noisy demonstration on the campus telling the Fine Gael leader that he was “not welcome in Dundalk”.
