Dáil motion on Magdalene Laundries abuse

Mary Lou McDonald TD

“The treatment of the 30,000 women and girls of the Magdalene Laundries goes to the very core of what was wrong historically in Irish society.

A DÁIL MOTION on the abuse that took place in the infamous Magdalene Laundries has been tabled by Sinn Féin with the support of 17 Independent TDs. (The motion was under discussion as An Phoblacht was going to print.)

Sinn Féin deputy leader Mary Lou McDonald TD said:

“The treatment of the 30,000 women and girls of the Magdalene Laundries goes to the very core of what was wrong historically in Irish society.

“To date, they have not received the recognition or redress that they deserve. The women are now predominantly ageing or elderly and it is of the utmost priority and urgency that their search for justice is responded to in full by the government and the state. Their case is unanswerable and justice must be done.”

Mary Lou called on Government parties to support the motion, saying the issue at the core was not a political one.
