TWO PEOPLE dragged from their van by masked hijackers in Derry are said to be “badly shaken” by the incident.

Youths forced a vehicle to stop in the Creggan area of the city yesterday while three masked men dragged the two occupants from the van. It was then driven a short distance to Fanad Drive and set on fire in what is believed to have been a ploy to draw the PSNI into the area.

Sinn Féin Deputy Mayor of Derry Kevin Campbell condemned the attack:

“One man, a pensioner in his 70s, is in total shock here. He’s not from Creggan but came in here to be faced with abuse from thuggish elements. He’s lost his livelihood in a matter of minutes. These thugs have absolutely no respect for the Creggan area or the people in it.”

The driver is a self-employed gardener and most of his equipment was in the van when it was set alight. He told reporters: “I’m still shaking, it scared the life out of me.”
