Why is Enda Kenny tight-lipped over his talk with Angela Merkel?

Why did he refuse to answer the elected members of the Dáil directly rather than hide behind waffle?

WHY WON’T Taoiseach Enda Kenny tell the Irish people what he and German Chancellor Angela Merkel spoke about following the passing of the Austerity Treaty last week?

The Taoiseach was quizzed by Sinn Féin, Fianna Fáil and the Technical Group in the Dáil today on whether he’d sought a write-down on bank debt.

Enda Kenny had previously claimed that he raised the issue of a write-down directly with Merkel in a telephone call on Friday.

So why did he refuse to answer the elected members of the Dáil directly rather than hide behind his waffle of “the very strong, very clear, very decisive decision” made by the electorate before stating that the issue of bank debt is separate from the referendum?

It has been widely reported since Friday that the German Government has completely rejected any idea of change in terms of the existing funding programme.

Sinn Féin Finance spokesperson Pearse Doherty TD said:

“There is a compelling case for a portion of this debt to be written off. However this can only be secured if the Government seeks a write-down and then follows this up with a serious political effort to secure such an outcome.”
