Human shield: The British Army base on top of Divis Tower flats

Roof-top British Army bases tried and tested in Belfast

RTÉ HEADLINES today include: “Londoners alarmed by plan to place missiles on top of apartment building during Olympics.”

RTÉ reports on a story broken by Dublin-born journalist Brian Whelan from near the Olympics site:

“Residents in east London have expressed concern over British Army plans to install high-velocity surface-to-air missiles on top of their apartment building during the Olympic Games.”

During the conflict in the North, media headlines were seldom so exercised by the permanent British Army base that commandeered the top two floors of Divis Tower Flats – and the families living unwillingly under the military installation – in west Belfast up until 2005.
