Red C poll sees Sinn Féin consolidate as main challenger to austerity

Gerry Adams canvassing at Dublin's GPO on Saturday for a NO vote

Gerry Adams said the EU treaty supported by Fine Gael, Labour and Fianna Fáil would introduce permanent austerity

A NEW Red C opinion poll for the Sunday Business Post consolidates Sinn Féin’s position as the main challenger to Fine Gael. And as the referendum campaign on the EU Austerity Treaty is about to begin on Monday, the number of people voting NO is growing.

In party support, Sinn Féin and Fianna Fáil both gained one point, to 19% and 17% respectively. Although Fine Gael is at 32%, it has dropped 2% and its Labour Party partner in government is down 1% to 14%, 5 points behind Sinn Féin.

Independents are up 1% to 18% but these include everyone from Left to Right, including individuals and the smaller Left groupings.

Looking at the treaty, the number saying they’ll vote NO has narrowed the gap, growing by 2% to 35%, against 47% thinking Yes. Support for the treaty is falling significantly amongst Fianna Fáil supporters despite the party backing the treaty.

Canvassing at the GPO in Dublin with Sinn Féin activists on Saturday, Gerry Adams TD said the EU treaty supported by Fine Gael, Labour and Fianna Fáil would introduce permanent austerity.
