‘Yes speeches’ dropped from referendum web after legal letter from Sinn Féin
The site originally carried speeches by the Taoiseach, the Tánaiste, and Minister of State for European Affairs Lucinda Creighton advocating a ‘Yes’ vote
THE Irish Government has now removed a raft of pro-Yes speeches by Government figures from the official referendum information website after a solicitor’s letter from Sinn Féin yesterday threatening immediate legal action.
The site originally carried speeches by the Taoiseach, the Tánaiste, and Minister of State for European Affairs Lucinda Creighton advocating a ‘Yes’ vote.
Education Minister Ruairí Quinn on RTÉ Radio’s ‘Morning Ireland’ yesterday defended the inclusion of the speeches on the basis that they were ‘information’ (!) and tried to cloud the issue by spluttering that Sinn Féin had its own website.
Sinn Féin deputy leader Mary Lou McDonald TD had earlier highlighted the Government’s attempts to pack what was supposed to be a neutral website with statements loaded in favour of the Government’s own ‘Yes’ campaign.
Sinn Féin is advocating rejection of the Fiscal Austerity Treaty on 31 May.
