DCU students vote against losing €10k in ‘Money Maze’

DUBLIN CITY UNIVERSITY students have backed a Sinn Féin college initiative and overturned a Students’ Union decision to put €10,000 into building a Labyrinth ‘quiet reflection area’.

Sinn Féin argued that the money would be better spent on badly-needed student services.

Many students were unaware that their union was giving €10,000 from their annual budget towards the construction of the Labyrinth, later nicknamed ‘The Money Maze’.

Following a high-profile campaign and petition by DCU Sinn Féin, a referendum was forced on the issue on 4 April. The result was an overwhelming rejection of the proposal with 69% voting not to put Student Union funds into the project.

Commenting on the result, DCU Sinn Féin secretary Dave Clougher said:

“On behalf of DCU Sinn Féin, I’d like to thank everyone for their support and above all for simply getting out and making their voices heard. This year’s turn-out was very good and it was great to see students take interest in how their money is spent.”
