Housing repossessions still faced by many

EVEN though home repossessions in the North have fallen by a quarter since this time last year, there is still a crisis facing hundreds of families who face losing their homes through no fault of their own but due to the recession, Sinn Féin Housing spokesperson Tony Hassan has said.
He said new Housing Minister Alex Attwood needs to show leadership in tackling the housing crisis.
“Currently there are already huge pressures on housing in Derry, with waiting lists for social housing and homelessness at an all-time high. Clearly, many people in Derry are finding it difficult to meet their repayments with ever-changing economic circumstances. In many cases, people are finding that the cost of living increases are pushing them over the financial edge.
“We need an imaginative response to this crisis, a responsible approach from mortgage providers, and leadership from the Housing Minister Alex Attwood, not only  in Derry City but right across the North.”
