Italian journalist translates Sands diary

By Peadar Whelan

Italian journalist and author Silvia Calamati has translated the Diary of Bobby Sands into Italian.
Speaking to An Phoblacht Calamati said that Bobby is an icon in Italy.
“His courage, commitment and sacrifice in dying on hunger strike has made him a legendary, revolutionary figure for many Italians, especially young people”, maintained the writer.
Calamati went on to say that she was also inspired to translate Bobby’s writings due to the negative reaction of some anti-republican commentators to the publication of Denis O’Hearn and Laurence McKeown’s biography of the Hunger Striker.
“This criticism was based on anti-republicanism and ignored the courage and sacrifice of Bobby and the 9 others who died on hunger strike in 1981,” she said.
The Italian author also included the lyrics of 7 songs relating to the hunger strike including Bobby’s Back Home in Derry and McIlhatton as well as Bik McFarlane’s tribute to his friend Song for Marcella.
Silvia Calamati is both a journalist and a writer. Since 1982 she has been interested in Irish history and has lived in Dublin and Belfast for considerable periods of her time.
Since 1999 she has been working as a free-lance journalist for many Italian radio stations, in particular with RAI NEWS 24 and RAI-Radiotelevisione Italiana, reporting on the main events throughout the Irish conflict. The Sands’ Diary is the latest in a long line of translations for the journalist, who has also written award-winning books on the war.
Later this year in Rome a publishing house is holding an event ‘A Day for Bobby Sands’ which will centre on the launch of the book and feature music commemorating the hunger strikers. Former Hunger Striker Laurence McKeown will speak on the day.
