SF to table motion of no confidence in Wicklow County Council Manager following arrest

Cllr. John Brady

Sinn Féin Councillors John Brady and John Snell have announced that they are to table a motion of no-confidence in Wicklow County Manager Eddie Sheehy. They are seeking to have this motion tabled at an emergency meeting which is hoped to take place in the coming days. Following the arrest of Mr. Sheehy on Tuesday morning as part of an investigation into the deaths of two fire fighters Brian Murray and Mark O’Shaughnessy in Bray in 2007, Cllr Brady said that it was untenable for Mr Sheehy to continue in his position.
“From the start Sinn Féin has demanded an independent public investigation into the circumstances leading to the deaths of Brian Murray and Mark O’Shaughnessy,” Cllr Brady said. “We do not believe that these tragic deaths were simply an accident. Sinn Féin and the community in Bray believe that they were the result of flaws in the system itself. We welcomed the fact that the Gardaí some months ago raided the offices of Wicklow County Council and took files.
“The County Manager Eddie Sheehy cannot continue in his position while he is being actively investigated by the Gardaí as part of their inquiry into these deaths. His position is untenable, particularly following his arrest today. He needs to step aside. That is why I and my colleague John Snell are tabling a motion of no confidence in Mr Sheehy which we will be asking councillors from all other parties to support this motion of no confidence.”
