Amnesty's urgent appeal to UN to continue to protect civilians in Chad

AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL in Ireland is urging people to lobby the UN Security Council to renew its MINURCAT mission to protect more than half a million Sudanese refugees from Darfur and internally-displaced Chadians living in eastern Chad. The current MINURCAT mandate is due to expire on 15 May 2010.
Amnesty says these people are at risk if MINURCAT leaves or no longer has a mandate to protect civilians. Highlighting the issue in Dublin’s O’Connell Street last Friday, Amnesty Ireland Executive Director Colm O’Gorman said a UN withdrawal would lead to an increase in the number of child soldiers being recruited.
The government of Chad already announced that an agreement has been reached with the UN to reduce the number of troops to 1,900 and to conclude the full withdrawal of MINURCAT by October 2010.
Take action now by sending an e-mail through the links below to the President of France, Nicolas Sarkozy, asking him to take the lead at the UN Security Council and ensure that the mandate of MINURCAT is renewed and civilians effectively protected.”
