A child of the nation

The murder in Tyrellstown, Dublin, of teenager Toyosi Shittabey on Good Friday has renewed determination to combat racism in Ireland. It is widely believed that there was racial motivation in the brutal knife attack on the 15-year-old. Last weekend’s demonstration in Dublin (reported page 20) brought people of all ethnic backgrounds together to say ‘never again’.
The fatal tragedy occurred at Easter when we recall the commitment of the 1916 Proclamation to “cherishing all the children of the nation equally”. Toyosi was a child of the nation, a child of a family that came here to live and work and make their contribution to this country. Ireland is now a nation of many ethnic backgounds, many colours and many cultures. That is to be celebrated and all should take from the example of the young people at last Saturday’s march who walked together in solidarity for equality and peace.
