Dublin Volunteer remembered

A crowd of 150 people assembled for the third annual Volunteer Martin `Doco' Doherty commemoration in Finglas on Dublin's Northside last Saturday 17 May. The commemoration made its way from Finglas villlage to the graveside in Glasnevin Cemetery, led by the Volunteers Smith/Harford/Doherty RFB, Dublin and the Volunteer Martin Doherty RFB, Glasgow and Sinn Féin banners .

At the graveside the proceedings were chaired by Sinn Féin Dublin Central candidate Christy Burke and the main oration delivered by Sean Crowe, Sinn Féin Dublin Southwest candidate.

Martin Doherty's life of active service with the IRA's Dublin Brigade and sacrifice in saving hundreds of lives in the aborted UVF attempt to blow up the Widow Scallan's pub in May 1994 were recalled.

``Everyone does not have to be a Doco,'' said Sean Crowe in encouraging people to play their part in the forthcoming general election in the 26 Counties.

A highly-successful function and football match took place in Finglas later on that night in Finglas.
