AROUND 70 people attended a graveside commemoration at Mountirwin cemetery near Gurteen Sligo on Sunday, 1 November to honour the life and death of Comdt. Michael Marren who died on 11 July 1921 – the date of the truce.  Marren’s feats are legendary in the South Sligo area where he grew up and commanded republican forces during the Tan War.
The launch of the new Michael J. Marren South Sligo Cumann took place following the commemoration.
The commemoration and launch of the new cumann received great support from surrounding areas and councillors including Seán MacManus, Arthur Gibbons, Chris MacManus, Gerry Murray and Michael Mulligan.
Councillor Pádraig Mac Lochlainn was the main speaker on the day and everyone believes this to be a solid beginning for Sligo Sinn Féin’s  continued growth.
