Lisbon Treaty referendum

I LIKED Derek Davis’s choice of tune during his Lisbon results post-mortem on his Sunday Magazine show on radio station 4fm – Fleetwood Mac’s Tell Me Lies.

THE immortal words of Liam Mellows, following the acceptance of The Treaty, under duress, nearly ninety years ago, were never so apt – “It was the FEAR of the people, rather than the WILL of the people.”

Given the undemocratic rerun of Lisbon and latest corruption revelations, will Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD make a Dáil statement calling on Fianna Fáil to ‘fully embrace and accept democratic means, unequivocally commit to the rule of law and to renounce all criminal activities’?

Cork women footballers deserve mention

AS a fairly new reader to An Phoblacht I’ve really enjoyed the sports columns. There aren’t many political newspapers that also look at sports and the GAA in particular. I also like that the author sometimes brings politics into it but never in a really pushy way. But I am very disappointed that there has been no mention in the sports section, or anywhere else, about the accomplishments of Cork Ladies Football team. Kilkenny might have won a four in a row but the Cork Ladies have gone one better than them with five consecutive wins, beating a fine Dublin team in the final. There might not have been as many people at our All-Ireland final as at Kerry’s, but it doesn’t make the passion, or the importance of the victory, any less.
