Three men are charged at Banbridge Court following crown forces raids in South Armagh the previous weekend. The men were severely beaten by British soldiers during their arrest.

Friday 18 April

IRA bombs and bomb scares disrupt the rail and road network in the north of England.

Monday 21 April

A pipe bomb explodes outside the Sinn Féin office in Shantallow in Derry. Minor damage is caused. Sinn Féin blames loyalists.

A 20-year-old Dublin youth dies in hospital following complications after taking the drug ecstasy in a Dublin night club.

Jacques Chirac calls a general election in France on the question of the single European currency.

Tuesday 22 April

Peruvian troops storm the Japanese ambassador's residence in Lima, releasing 71 hostages. The Peruvian president said one hostage, two soldiers and 14 rebels were killed in the assault.

Noel Fox, an accountant and trustee of Dunnes Settlement Trust and a former close business associate of Ben Dunne, supported Dunne's claim that he paid almost £1.3 million to former Taoiseach and Fianna Fáil leader Charlie Haughey when he gave evidence to the tribunal of inquiry.

A Belfast Court over-rules Michael Howard's assertion that ``life means life'' in relation to two republican prisoners.
