McCann memorial unveiled

During a ceremony that was clearly moving for the family of Joe McCann, and curious by Belfast standards, a plaque was unveiled on the 25th anniversary of the death of this Official IRA volunteer on Sunday 13 April at Joy Street where McCann was shot dead by British paratroops.

McCann's name is legendary and his commitment and courage to the republican ideal transcended the fissures in republican politics at the time. That was obvious by the attendance at the unveiling of many republicans including the Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams, who was a close friend of McCann.

Representatives of the `Official Republican Movement', the Workers Party and the IRSP were all present.

Fergal McCann, Joe's son, read a tribute to his father describing him as a ``father, soldier and a revolutionary''.
