Following the tragic death of Dún Laoghaire republican and socialist Dan Kennedy, Sinn Féin members across the city have been paying tributes to one of the party’s local stalwarts.
Dan Kennedy was born in 1958, lived much his life in Pottery Road, Dún Laoghaire, and moved to Cherrywood, Loughlinstown earlier this year. An active trade unionist and socialist, Dan joined Sinn Féin in 2000 and was a prominent campaigner for better housing in Dún Laoghaire and for the upgrading of St Michael’s Hospital.
A strong internationalist Dan took a keen interest in political events in Cuba and the Basque Country.
An active member of the Clarke/McVerry/O’Neill Cumann, Dan was the cumann secretary until his untimely death. Dan was widely liked, good craic with a great character and always managed to bring a smile to people’s faces.
Speaking after the funeral Sinn Féin Ballybrack representative Eoin Ó Broin said: “Dan was a loving husband and father, a good friend and a true republican. Whenever there was work to be done, no matter what the weather, Dan was there. A loyal and faithful party member, a hard worker, and always a pleasure to be with.”
Sinn Féin’s Dún Laoghaire representative Darragh Burton described Dan as a “great republican, always there when there was work to be done, eager, enthusiastic and reliable.” Darragh also paid tribute to Dan’s wife Margaret, who “always supported the local Sinn Féin cumann and Dan’s political work, looking after party activists during elections”.
