Rail strike avoided at LRC

TALKS at the Labour Relations Commission have avoided stoppages in Munster rail services over the assignment of work to contract workers.
Despite this move, SIPTU representative said that relations between workers and Iarnrod Éireann management are now “deplorable”. The talks between trade unions and Iarnród Éireann management, which finished last Thursday, resulted in scheduled industrial action being called off. Rail staff in Cork, Limerick and Kerry had planned to withdraw labour over the course of the bank holiday weekend. The workers objected to management assigning to contract workers duties that are the responsibility of permanent Iarnród Éireann workers. Further talks are scheduled to continue this week.

Job losses in Waterford city

HONEYWELL Turbo Technologies, which makes engine booster systems for cars and other vehicles in Waterford city, announced this week that it is to start consultations with trade unions in an effort to reduce its workforce by 100 between now and the end of the year. Management said redundancies will initially be voluntary and have not yet commented on compulsory redundancies.

Sharp rise in job losses

FIGURES released by the Central Statistics Office in the 26 Counties show a sharp rise in those signing on during the month of July.
The total figures for the 26 Counties rose by over 60,000 in the past year, making it the biggest annual increase on record.

Union greets new Iralco ownership

THE Unite trade union, which represents 420 workers at the Iralco plant in Collinstown, County Westmeath, has welcomed an announcement that liquidators have found a buyer for the business as a going concern.
The plant, which was established in 1964, is worth an estimated €8 million per annum to the local economy and manufactures automotive parts.
Liquidators were appointed in April when the plant closed for a week prior to reopening after discussions with workers to give it the best chance of finding a buyer.
Unite National Officer John Bolger said:
“This is great news for the workers, for their families and for the people of Collinstown. We will work closely with the new owners to build a long-term, sustainable future for Iralco and its employees.”
