Beechmount remembers its fallen

SUNDAY, 1 June, saw people from the Beechmount area of the city gathering to attend a commemoration ceremony at the Memorial Garden on Beehmount Avenue in honour of the Volunteers from ‘A’ Company, Óglaigh na hÉireann, and those republicans from the mid-Falls area who fought for a united Ireland.
Jim ‘Flash’ McVeigh, who was the last O/C in command of the republican prisoners in Long Kesh, addressed the crowd.
He reflected on the importance of commemorations for republicans as it keeps the memory of the republican martyrs to the front of our minds.
“Commemorations also mean that we are highlighting the values of sacrifice and dedication that inspired those Volunteers and other activists who died.
“We are embracing our dead comrades who made the ultimate sacrifice and we are commiting ourselves to carrying on the struggle until we achieve the freedom that they fought and died for.”
