THE death occurred in Belfast on 20 January of Margaret ‘Maggie’ O’Rawe, mother of the late IRA Volunteer Eddie ‘Mundo’ O’Rawe.
Margaret O’Rawe, neé Murphy, was born in 7 Garnet Street in Belfast on 14 March 1919. She grew up in the republican tradition. Her own mother died of a heart attack while carrying ammunition. Her two brothers, Eddie and James (‘Spotter’), both spent time in prison for their republican activities.
Margaret and her husband, Johnny, had four children together: Eddie, Philomena, Kathleen and Jim.
Johnny was also to spend time in a British prison and like many wives Maggie was left to rear their children.
During the most recent IRA campaign Maggie was to suffer untold heartache when her first-born son, Eddie (‘Mundo’), was killed by the British Army in 1973. Her daughter, Philomena, was to be her rock when Kathleen and Jim both ended up in prison.
Maggie visited jails all over Ireland and Britain but never complained – she lived for her family and they lived for her.
She will be lovingly remembered as the heart of the family she faithfully stood by, no matter what the consequences.
She is reunited with all her loving family who went before her. Sleep easy, Maggie, and watch over us all until we meet again.
