IN NOVEMBER 1957, during the IRA’s ‘Border Campaign’, five men were killed in an explosion that demolished a small cottage at the foot of Edentubber Mountain in County Louth, close to the border with the Six Counties.
The five who died at Edentubber, a few hundred yards from the border crossing at Carrickarnon, and since known as the Edentubber Martyrs, included the owner of the cottage, 54-year-old Michael Waters; Paul Smith, 19-years-old, who was born and lived at the Gardens, Bessbrook; Oliver Craven, from Dominic Street, Newry; and Patrick Parle and George Keegan of Wexford.
The 50th anniversary commemoration of the Edentubber Martyrs will take place this year on Sunday, 11 November, at 2pm. Preparations to recognise this special year have been going on for quite some time.
The Edentubber Martyrs Commemoration Committee is engaged in preparing a wide variety of events which will be a fitting tribute not only to the Edentubber Martyrs but to their families and to their comrades who participated in ‘Operation Harvest’, the IRA campaign of 1956-1962.
The Edentubber Commemoration Committee recently launched the ‘Edentubber Martyrs 50th Anniversary Website’. Newry and Armagh Sinn Féin MP Conor Murphy and Louth Sinn Féin TD Arthur Morgan officiated at the launch. They were joined by the Deputy Mayor of Newry and Mourne, Councillor Charlie Casey, and Maria Caraher of the Edentubber Martyrs Commemoration Committee.
Arthur Morgan said:
“Edentubber is of national importance to Irish republicans and I have no doubt that this special year’s events will pay a fitting tribute to all those involved in  Operation Harvest. This year’s fiftieth anniversary commemoration will continue to remind  a  new generation of Irish republicans of the sacrifices and hardships that many endured in our struggle for Irish unity.”
