Speaking on Tuesday as ESB Unions met to discuss possible strike action over plans to hand over the National Transmission Grid to Eirgrid, Sinn Féin Workers’ Rights Spokesperson Arthur Morgan said Sinn Féin will support any plans to fight the privatisation of the ESB.
The Louth TD said:
“The planned break-up of the ESB is effectively preparing the profitable state-owned company for privatisation and there are concerns that the recent price hikes are part of the ‘fattening up’ process designed to attract private interests.
“The Government seems determined to proceed full steam ahead with its privatisation agenda despite previous fiascos such as the privatisation of Eircom which enriched the wealthy few at the expense of predominantly rural customers who are still without adequate phone and broadband access.
“Sinn Féin will continue to oppose this Government’s privatisation agenda and will support any plans, including industrial action if needed, to fight the privatisation of the ESB.”
