No answers for Loughinisland families

Speaking after the families of those killed in a loyalist massacre in Loughinisland, County Down in 1994 met with British Security Minister Paul Goggins, Sinn Féin South Down MLA Caitríona Ruane said: “The British Minister – instead of providing answers, which he undoubtedly could have – chose to hide behind the excuse of PSNI operational reasons when dealing with specific questions from the relatives.

“These families have heard all of these excuses before. They are determined that their search for the truth will not be derailed by elements within the British system who, it has become increasingly clear, were involved in both the original murders and the subsequent failed RUC and PSNI investigation.”

Roche must take hard line with British

Sinn Féin Environment spokesperson Arthur Morgan TD has called on Minister Dick Roche to take a hard line on British Government plans to re-open the Thorp nuclear reprocessing plant at Sellafield during his meeting with Alistair Darling, the British Secretary of State for trade and industry, in London today. Morgan also highlighted a shortfall in British funding for the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority which, he said, brings into question British commitments on “cleaning up their act on nuclear power”.

Concern at falling farm incomes

Sinn Féin’s Martin Ferris TD, has expressed concern about a report that shows that farmers’ incomes in Ireland fell by almost 11% last year. This contrasted with an overall average increase in farm incomes across the EU.

“The fact that farm incomes fell last year is extremely worrying, as is the scale of the reverse. What it proves is that the potential of the new scenario introduced by decoupling is not being realised. One of the reasons for this is that this state has no real strategy for maintaining viable family farming and that the opportunities presented by new areas of production such as energy crops are being neglected at policy level.  Another major factor is that farmers’ share of the price paid to consumers continues to be squeezed by processors and retailers”, Ferris said.
