Saddam execution outside international law

Commenting on 30 December on the execution of former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein, Sinn Féin Dáil leader Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD said that the trial and execution were entirely outside of international law and human rights standards.

Ó Caoláin said: “Without any doubt Saddam Hussein presided over a brutal and violent regime and he was guilty of the most barbaric abuses of Human Rights.

“However the show trial conducted and the subsequent execution performed in front of the TV cameras was outside of international law and outside any normal Human Rights standards.

“It will, I believe have further violent ramifications for the beleaguered people of Iraq and indeed the entire Middle East region in the time ahead.”
