Mayo County Council to mark 1981 Hunger Strike

Owen Carron, election agent for Bobby Sands during the Hunger Striker's successful bid for a Westminster seat in 1981 will be the guest speaker of Mayo County Council in Ballina Library this Friday, 8 December.

Earlier this year the elected members of Mayo County Council supported a motion to mark the 25th anniversary of the Hunger Strikes.

After the death of Bobby Sands, following 66 days on hunger strike, Owen Carron won the vacant Fermanagh/South Tyrone seat with an increased majority making him the youngest MP at the time. Like Sands, Carron never took his seat in London.

The Mayo County Council supported event which begins at 8pm is expected to attract great attention and is open, free of charge, to the public.
