Hunger Strikes: Year of remembrance

Frank Stagg to be remembered at Wakefield ceremony

The death of Mayo Hunger Striker Frank Stagg is to be remembered in a ceremony at Wakefield Prison in England, where he died on 12 February 1976.

The commemoration is organised by the 1981 Hunger Strike Committee, Cairde na hÉireann and the Troops Out Movement.

The Wakefield commemoration will take place on Saturday 11 February and will involve a march to Wakefield Prison, where a rally will be held to mark the 30th anniversary of Stagg's death after 62 days on hunger strike.

The march will assemble near Wakefield Prison, West Yorkshire at 12 noon and parade around the immediate area before the wreath laying ceremony at the prison.

According to a spokesperson for the organisers, Jim Slaven of Cairde na hÉireann, a prominent republican speaker will be in attendance. He also confirmed that the itinerary for upcoming Hunger Strike Committee events in Scotland, England and Wales will be announced.

A function will be held later that day. Meanwhile, a mural, dedicated to the memory of Frank Stagg and Michael Gaughan, will be unveiled at 3pm on Sunday 12 February at Dunville Street on the Falls Road, Belfast.

Sinn Féin MLA Gerry Kelly, who himself spent time on hunger strike in England, will unveil the mural.
