Longford 100 job losses devastating blow to local economy – Martin Ferris
SPEAKING as it was confirmed that 100 jobs are to be lost at B3 Cable Solutions in Longford today, Sinn Féin Workers’ Rights spokesperson Martin Ferris called on the Government to make job creation the Number 1 priority over the coming months, including the production of a job-creation strategy.
He said the loss of so many jobs at the plant in Longford will be a devastating blow to the local economy.
“Once again news is breaking of job losses that are set to bring a crushing blow to another local community. The loss of this many jobs in Longford will be a devastating blow to the local economy. Nearly 200 people signed on the dole in Longford in June and now at least another 100 jobs are to go.
“Sinn Féin has been calling on the Government to bring forward a jobs creation strategy for the past three years but they were too distracted by the banks to take any notice
“While we have officially come out of recession, this will mean nothing to those who have lost their jobs unless the Government gets serious about job creation. Over the coming months the Government needs to make this the Number 1 priority. We must now see the production of a job-creation strategy.
“The Government must come to realise that unless we start to get people back to work the harsh realities of the economic recession will continue for many thousands of people for the foreseeable future.”
