A delegation of Ógra Shinn Féin activists recently returned from an important visit to the Basque Country aimed at building and maintaining links with the Basque youth movement Segi.

The Ógra delegation addressed gatherings and answered questions in relation to the Irish republican struggle in the wake of the 28 July statement by Óglaigh na hÉireann announcing an end to its armed campaign.

Among those the Ógra delegation met on the trip were representatives of the Basque political party Herri Batasua, LAB which is a Basque trade union group in which Segi are actively involved, and representatives from a feminist group in the Basque region.

The delegation also held meetings with different organisations on the issues of social struggles, the importance of languages and the student union movement worldwide.

The Ógra activists say they hope to learn from the Basque struggle and Segi in particular. The trip will be reversed in a number of months when the Basques will send a delegation to Ireland for a seven-day tour of the country.
