Moves to ease Fountain flashpoint

Sinn Féin in Derry has offered its support to community leaders on both sides of the Fountain Estate interface in a bid to curtail ongoing sectarian attacks.

Sinn Féin Councillor Peter Anderson was speaking after the latest petrol-bomb attack on Protestant homes in the Fountain Estate last weekend.

"These attacks are totally unacceptable and are being carried out by a group of anti-social elements who are attempting to create tensions in an already volatile area," said Anderson.

"This was not the only incident recently, with attacks coming from both sides of the interface along Bishop Street. The people who live along the front line are not the people carrying out these attacks but are the ones under constant fear of the next attack."

Anderson said a community forum is being set up between the two communities.

"Community workers on both sides are working flat out to end these attacks and I will be offering my full support to any initiative that can resolve these current difficulties," he said.
