Race hate figures show 80% rise

Commenting after it was revealed that race hate crimes have increased by 80% in the past year, South Belfast Sinn Féin Assembly Alex Maskey says decisive action is required.

"Race hate crime is now a major issue which needs to be addressed," he said. "A clear message must be sent out by politicians and communities that there is no tolerance for this type of activity.

"Many of these attacks have been concentrated in areas of South Belfast. Some have been the work of unionist paramilitaries. However, there is a worrying acceptance of race hate crime from many within society.

"This problem can be effectively addressed if the necessary political and community will is displayed. We have a duty to those ethnic minority communities to rally to their side in the face of this campaign and send out a very clear message that they are a valued and important part of our society."
