Court victory for bin tax campaign

Councillor Daithí Doolan has welcomed Tuesday's Circuit Court ruling against Dublin City Council's bin charges as a victory for justice. "Now we must step up the campaign and bury the tax once and for all," he says.

"Today's findings once again vindicate all those who have been involved in protesting against the bin charges," he said. "The campaign proved that the double taxation is totally unworkable and now the courts have shown it to be illegal as well."

There is now the farcical situation where City Council must pay back the public for an illegal and unwarranted charge.

"This now gives the City Council the opportunity to dump bin charges and bring in a proper strategy of Zero Waste, a strategy based on reducing, reusing and recycling our waste," said Doolan.

Councillor Dessie Ellis added that "the Management in City Council have tried every tactic to impose this tax, debt collectors, bully boy tactics, jailings have all failed. Now even the courts have found against them. The policy of double taxation is doomed to failure."
