Clooney base plans welcomed

Derry citizens have welcomed the decision that the former British Army base at Clooney is to be re-developed to create social and economic benefits for the people of the city. However, the speed with which the Department of Social Development (DSD) and the Northwest Development Office secured the site and published a consultation paper on its future is being contrasted with the length of time it is taking to produce any such ideas for the Ebrington and Fort George bases.

Sinn Féin Westminster candidate for Foyle, Mitchel McLaughlin, says the plans for Clooney have set an important precedent for all other bases in Derry. He called on the DSD to now join forces work with Ilex, the Urban Regeneration Company, to develop other bases in the city.
