Ógra Shinn Féin plant Liberty Tree

The Tyrone Garden of Remembrance was the setting for the second event in West Tyrone Sinn Fein's calendar of events to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Sinn Fein.

The event took place on Saturday afternoon 19 March and the high point was the planting of 'a liberty tree', the idea of Ógra Shinn Féin activists who are keen to trace the French connection.

In a historical context, the liberty tree sends out a message of freedom, unity and liberty. It was first used during the French revolution small towns and village's where people planted liberty trees in prospect of freedom. Barry McColgan of Ógra explained "it was the historical and symbolic context in which Ógra decided to plant the liberty tree".

Veteran republicans Jimmy McElduff and Patsy McMahon planted the liberty tree. Both men are former Sinn Fein Councillors in the Mid Tyrone area and both are also former chairs of the Tyrone National Graves Association.

Barry McElduff gave the main speech in the Garden. "It is fitting that Ógra have chosen to plant a liberty tree, which has been a symbol of freedom for many decades," he said. "In 2005, as we prepare and plan for Irish freedom, we also carry on this proud tradition."
