With the Údaras Na Gaeltacht elections little over three weeks away, candidates contesting the election are on the campaign trail drumming up support.

Sinn Féin's Údaras candidate in Donegal, Gráinne Mhic Géidigh, travelled to Letterkenny on Friday to lodge her nomination papers.

Speaking afterwards, she said:

"The fact that I am the only female candidate in the county highlights the need for immediate action on the issue of gender equality in Donegal.

"There has never been a woman elected to the board of Údaras in Donegal, Gaeltacht women have had no voice for many years; that needs to change, and I hope to be the person to do that. As a mother of four, I am fully aware of the problems that face women in Gaeltacht areas; issues such as childcare and education initiatives have gone unaddressed in the past.

"For some time now, I have been on the campaign trail talking to people on the doorsteps from Fanad to Gweedore to Glencolmcille and the same issues keep coming up, employment being the key player. People don't have jobs and if people don't have employment, the whole community is affected.

"Sinn Féin are firm believers in empowering communities, working with the community to create a society that embraces all. The people of the Gaeltacht have had to put up with the inequality, unemployment and underdevelopment for too long. The time for change is here and Sinn Féin is the party to deliver it."
