Gaeltacht residents left out in cold

Sinn Fein's Údaras candidate Gráinne Mhic Géidigh has voiced her disappointment at the withdrawal of the evening bus service between Falcarragh and Dungloe via Gweedore. She was speaking after the Lough Swilly Bus Company withdrew its service connecting Letterkenny to Dungloe via Cloughaneely and Gweedore parishes.

Mhic Géidigh said: "I am very disappointed by the decision to withdraw this service. However more than anything I am deeply concerned at the number of older people who have no means of transport now.

"Lack of public transport in the Gaeltacht is an issue that deeply concerns me as many people do not have their own transport and live in very rural areas.

Particularly, older people in the community depended on this service to provide a social outlet for them, many dependent on this service to take them to Mass or to get groceries. Now that the service is withdrawn these people have no choice but to sit in the house alone.

"Myself and Councillor Pearse Doherty will be following up on this issue and are calling for a acceptable service for all the people of the Gaeltacht."
