Withdrawal of PSNI invite welcomed

Sinn Féin Councillor for North Belfast, Carál ní Chuilín, has welcomed the withdrawal of an invitation to the PSNI from a community safety event for the elderly held this week at St Kevin's Hall in the New Lodge area.

"This event is a road show that highlights to the elderly in our community schemes, projects and services aimed at address in the health and safety needs of elderly in the community. However a problem obviously arose when the PSNI were invited to attend," said ní Chuilín

"This came to our attention when leaflets stating that the PSNI were to attend were delivered in the local area and as a result a number of elderly residents made their objections known that they would not attend.

"This is hardly surprising given the fact that North Belfast has been on the receiving end of bad policing for over 30 years and only two weeks ago we see pensioners doors being kicked in house raids.

"I am glad to see that the organisers had the prudence to withdraw the invitation. Unfortunately it was too late for many local residents to know about and I would suggest that this worthwhile event is held again in the near future."
